Why Trees Matter

Trees are critical to both human well-being and environmental stability. From purifying water and air to cooling urban environments and creating habitats for wildlife, trees play a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance.

Purification and Water Supply
Trees act as natural filters, purifying water by absorbing rain through their roots, which prevents soil erosion and reduces flood risks. Some of the world’s largest cities, including New York and Singapore, rely on protected forest areas for their drinking water, highlighting the importance of trees in maintaining our water supply.

Oxygen and Air Quality
Often called the "lungs of the planet," trees produce oxygen and absorb harmful gases like CO2, sulphur dioxide, ammonia, and nitrogen oxides. One acre of trees can produce enough oxygen to support 12 people for a year.

Cooling the Climate
Trees naturally cool the surrounding air through shade and a process called transpiration cooling, which involves releasing water droplets from their leaves. This helps reduce temperatures, particularly in urban areas.

Mental Health and Social Benefits
Trees also provide significant social and health benefits. Many essential medicines are derived from tree bark, leaves, and flowers, while forest products support the livelihoods of people in developing regions. Additionally, research has shown that exposure to nature, including green spaces and forests, can improve mental health and cognitive function.

The Environmental Impact of Planting Trees

Beyond their direct benefits to people, trees are essential for the environment. Forests are home to 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity and provide shelter to a wide range of species. Reforestation efforts help protect these habitats, supporting the fight against biodiversity loss.

Carbon Capture and Storage
Trees are natural carbon sinks, capturing CO2 from the atmosphere. Each year, forests absorb around 2 billion tonnes of CO2, helping to offset emissions from fossil fuel use. Deforestation, on the other hand, releases large amounts of stored CO2, contributing significantly to global emissions. Combatting this through tree planting is a key strategy in addressing climate change.

Soil Health
Trees improve soil structure and prevent erosion. Their roots loosen topsoil, allowing water to penetrate, while fallen leaves contribute to nutrient recycling, benefiting the entire ecosystem.
