The study, which surveyed HiQ’s nationwide network of autocentres, underscores how severe road damage is becoming a major concern for British motorists. Potholes, uneven surfaces, and other hazards are causing not only uncomfortable rides but also costly repairs, with many drivers left footing the bill for tyre replacements. The findings are a stark reminder of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and tyre checks, especially in areas plagued by poor road quality.
The HiQ study reveals a striking disparity between counties in terms of road quality. West Sussex recorded the highest percentage of tyre replacements caused by road damage, with an astonishing 65% of cases linked to potholes and other hazards. Derbyshire (41.4%) and Hampshire (41.3%) also ranked high on the list of counties with the worst road conditions.
In contrast, drivers in Staffordshire, Northamptonshire, and Devon seem to be faring better, with just 9.8%, 13.5%, and 14% of tyre replacements in these areas, respectively, attributed to road-related damage. These figures highlight the urgent need for infrastructure improvements in many parts of the country.
The study’s findings are a wake-up call for both motorists and policymakers. Poor road conditions not only lead to increased motoring costs but also compromise road safety. As British roads continue to deteriorate, drivers face more frequent tyre repairs and replacements, further straining household budgets.
Craig Sprigmore, Retail Director UK & Ireland at HiQ Tyres & Autocare, noted the widespread frustration among drivers: “HiQ’s study highlights the ongoing challenge that drivers face with road damage in the United Kingdom. Drivers are becoming incredibly frustrated with the state of the roads across the country, so it's clear that badly damaged roads are not just a nuisance but a real safety concern.”
Sprigmore urged drivers to prioritise tyre safety by regularly inspecting their vehicles: “At HiQ, we’re dedicated to providing customers with the best possible care for their vehicles, from offering high-quality tyres to helping them navigate the issues caused by poor road conditions. We urge drivers to regularly check the condition of their tyres and visit their local HiQ store, where a team of experts will be glad to conduct a free tyre pressure and safety check for customer peace of mind.”
One of the key contributors to Britain’s pothole problem is the country's unpredictable weather, which exacerbates road deterioration. Freeze-thaw cycles during winter cause cracks in road surfaces, which are further damaged by heavy traffic. Potholes can develop quickly and grow deep, causing substantial damage to tyres, suspensions, and other vehicle components.
Regular tyre inspections and proactive maintenance are essential for drivers who want to reduce the risk of damage from these road hazards. HiQ’s network of over 160 autocentres across the UK offers comprehensive car servicing and tyre maintenance, including free tyre pressure and safety checks.
In addition to offering expert tyre care, HiQ provides a free accidental tyre damage warranty with every Goodyear tyre purchase, further demonstrating its commitment to customer service and safety.
As road quality continues to decline in many parts of the UK, addressing infrastructure issues and prioritising road maintenance is becoming ever more critical. In the meantime, HiQ’s research serves as a reminder for drivers to stay vigilant about the condition of their vehicles to ensure safer journeys for all.
