The new AI-driven system extends Nexen’s use of artificial intelligence, which has previously been applied across the tyre development process, into the manufacturing phase. Nexen's AI technology now helps in non-destructive inspection procedures, utilising machine vision to detect tyre defects with unparalleled accuracy. By incorporating both x-ray inspection and laser interferometry (shearography), the system identifies structural flaws and even minuscule air bubbles, which can otherwise escape human detection.

The results are impressive: Nexen reports a defect detection reproducibility rate of up to 99.96%. The AI software can spot tiny irregularities that human inspectors might miss, significantly enhancing tyre quality and consistency.

The system’s AI training process is also automated, allowing for quick adaptation to new manufacturing settings. Developed in collaboration with Neurocle Inc, known for their expertise in AutoML solutions, and PDS Solution Inc, a specialist in tyre design and analysis, Nexen’s platform integrates MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) technology. This cutting-edge approach includes selective data collection, AI model validation, and continuous post-deployment monitoring, all designed to ensure the system’s high performance and adaptability.

The MLOps framework has also drastically reduced the time needed to create deep-learning models. What once required six to twelve months can now be completed in just two days. This innovation allows the system to be swiftly implemented in various factory settings, accelerating production efficiency.
