Virtual Tyre Development with Real-World Benefits

The introduction of Kumho’s Digital Twin (DT) system marks a significant leap forward in tyre technology. Traditionally, tyre development has relied heavily on physical testing in the real world. With the DT system, this process has evolved into the virtual realm, allowing engineers to create, test, and refine tyre designs in a digital environment.

This shift to a virtual development process means that Kumho’s design engineers can now simulate and optimise tyre performance without having to manufacture physical prototypes. As a result, the system is expected to drastically shorten the overall development timeline while reducing costs—a win for both Kumho and its customers.

The Digital Twin system will be used to generate new tyre designs, predict performance, and run advanced simulations, such as vehicle driving dynamics. The system's capabilities make it possible to test numerous variables, including road conditions and vehicle types, all within a virtual space, resulting in more efficient and precise product development.

Staying Ahead of Industry Trends

Kumho Tire’s move towards digitalisation is driven by two main factors: the global demand for digital transformation and the tightening of environmental regulations. By incorporating AI, big data analytics, and CAE into its tyre development process, Kumho is staying ahead of these trends and creating more environmentally friendly, high-performance tyres.

Kim Keewoon, head of Kumho’s Virtual Product Development Center, commented on the new system:
“Kumho Tire is applying new technologies such as CAE, artificial intelligence and digital transformation to the tire development process, with the DT system established for tire designers. The DT system will strengthen our technology competitiveness and contribute to developing more advanced tires with better performance.”

The Future of Global Collaboration and Enhanced Accuracy

Looking ahead, Kumho plans to migrate the Digital Twin system to a cloud-based platform. This will allow engineers from around the world to access the same system, enabling seamless global collaboration on tyre development projects. Regardless of location, engineers will be able to work on designs and run simulations anytime, anywhere.

Further improvements are also in the pipeline. Kumho aims to increase the accuracy of tyre performance predictions by upgrading the performance prediction systems. Additionally, the introduction of a vehicle driving simulator will enhance the reliability of the simulations, ensuring that Kumho continues to produce top-tier tyres that meet the highest standards of performance and safety.

With these advances, Kumho Tire is not only speeding up development but also paving the way for a new era of smarter, greener tyre production.
