The network will prominently feature 125 sites across Germany, forming the country’s largest EV truck charging network. The project’s first site is set to open this year, with 80 additional sites expected by the end of 2025. This extensive rollout highlights Germany’s commitment to advancing electric mobility for heavy-duty transport.
Beyond Germany, the network will extend to Austria, the UK, Denmark, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. These sites, strategically placed at MAN service bases, will be designed with drive-through facilities to accommodate electric trucks and buses.
Leonhard Birnbaum, CEO of E.ON, underscores the significance of this project: “Electric mobility is crucial for reducing heavy commercial vehicle emissions by 90% by 2040. We’re investing heavily to boost the infrastructure for electric heavy goods transport, paving the way for sustainable logistics and green supply chains.”
Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, adds: “To succeed in the mobility transition, we need 50,000 charging points for heavy commercial vehicles by 2030. Our partnership with E.ON is a significant step towards this goal, but we still need strong policy support.”
The network’s modular construction will begin with 400-kilowatt charging stations, enabling electric trucks to recharge up to 300 kilometres in just 45 minutes. Future upgrades will include the MCS megawatt charging system, setting a new standard in the commercial vehicle sector.
Sukhjinder Singh, CEO of E.ON subsidiary E.ON Drive Infrastructure, states: “Our partnership with MAN sets a new standard for electromobility in the commercial vehicle sector. Combining MAN’s service network with E.ON’s charging expertise, we are paving the way for a sustainable future in heavy-duty transport.”
Friedrich Baumann, Executive Board Member for Sales and Customer Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus SE, emphasises the critical need for the right infrastructure: “The right charging infrastructure is crucial for customers switching from diesel to electric. Our collaboration with E.ON will ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place.”
This initiative aligns with Germany’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heavy goods traffic by 55% by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2045. The EU’s ambitious targets aim to cut CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles by 65% by 2035 and 90% by 2040 compared to 2019 levels.
E.ON’s extensive experience with over 500,000 car charging points across Europe, combined with its prowess in financing, site analysis, and grid connection, will support this ambitious endeavour. MAN plans to launch its first production-ready electric truck in 2024, boasting a daily range of up to 800 kilometres, with electric city buses and coaches to follow by 2025.
