Alcaline, which operates a fleet of 178 HGVs and 230 trailers, specialises in transporting high-value automotive parts across Europe. With more than two decades of loyalty to Michelin, the haulier exclusively fits the manufacturer’s tyres on all new truck purchases. According to Billy Dell, Fleet Tyre Manager at Alcaline, the decision is based on both performance and brand image.
“They’re the best brand of tyre there is. They look good on our trucks and give the image that we’re after, which is a professional fleet that is well maintained,” says Dell.
Alcaline uses mega trailers to move just-in-time automotive parts for leading manufacturers, in addition to transporting heavy plant and equipment. With destinations spanning Italy, France, Switzerland, and beyond, the company relies on tyres that can handle high mileage and the demanding nature of long-distance continental work.
The company fits its tractor units with MICHELIN X Line Energy tyres in sizes 315/60 R22.5 and 295/60 R22.5, which accommodate the lower ride height of their vehicles. Their mega trailers are equipped with the rarer 455/45 R22.5 fitments from the same range.
Dell notes that the MICHELIN X Line Energy tyres have delivered the expected fuel-saving benefits, but their longevity has been a pleasant surprise: “The X Line Energy tyres have delivered great fuel saving benefits as expected and really surprised us in how well they’ve lasted handling high mileage continental work.”
Specifically designed for trucks, coaches, and trailers on long-distance routes, MICHELIN X Line Energy tyres are optimised for high average speeds, offering excellent rolling resistance. This not only cuts fuel consumption but also reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) – a key factor in Alcaline’s tyre management strategy.
In line with Michelin’s multi-life policy, Alcaline maximises the lifespan of its tyres by regrooving and retreading them as Michelin Remix tyres, extending the performance of each casing. This practice significantly contributes to reduced TCO and enhances the sustainability of the fleet by extracting maximum value from each tyre.
In addition to the X Line Energy tyres, Alcaline also equips its fleet with tyres from the MICHELIN X Multi truck tyre range when appropriate. The haulier benefits from Michelin’s accidental damage guarantee, offering further peace of mind in its tyre management strategy.
Marking its 30th anniversary last year, Alcaline continues to expand its services across Europe. Alongside its core automotive logistics, the company handles steel transportation on the continent and offers a wide range of services from the UK, including groupage, expedited deliveries, airfreight, and double-manned operations.
By investing in premium tyres like the MICHELIN X Line Energy range and employing smart tyre management practices, Alcaline continues to lead in operational efficiency, ensuring they meet the high standards required for international haulage.
