The rigorous Auto Express test subjected eight of the top-selling summer tyres in Europe to ten separate assessments, focusing on the popular 225/45 R17 size. Tested on a Volkswagen Golf at a state-of-the-art proving ground in Montpellier, France, the Ultrac excelled in multiple categories, including wet handling, braking, cabin noise, and rolling resistance.
One of the standout features of the Ultrac was its performance in the newly enhanced ‘noise and refinement’ test, where it secured the top position. This test evaluates cabin noise levels and bump absorption across varied surfaces, areas where the Ultrac demonstrated exceptional quietness and comfort.
The Ultrac also shone in wet conditions, placing second in both braking and wet-cornering tests. During the wet-cornering assessment, the tyre achieved the second-fastest lap time on a 35m circle with 1mm of water, and it nearly matched the top performer in the wet braking test, stopping efficiently from 50 mph.
Additionally, the Ultrac's rolling resistance has seen marked improvement since last year’s test, where it climbed to second place, offering significantly better fuel efficiency—a crucial factor for drivers concerned about both performance and economy.
Despite its impressive performance, the Vredestein Ultrac was the second most affordable tyre in the lineup, further solidifying its status as a ‘Best Buy’. This combination of performance and value makes the Ultrac an outstanding choice for summer driving.
Auto Express testers highlighted the Ultrac’s ongoing development, noting, “The Ultrac has added low rolling resistance to its skill set and emerges victorious from an excellent top three, thanks to its blend of wet weather performance, refinement, and new-found economy.”
Yves Pouliquen, VP Commercial at Apollo Tyres, commented on the Ultrac's success, stating: “This is a highly respected independent test, and the Ultrac’s exceptional performance is a direct consequence of the ongoing efforts made by our European R&D team to stay at the forefront of a highly competitive summer tyre market.”
The Vredestein Ultrac is engineered by Apollo Tyres’ global R&D centre in Enschede, Netherlands. It sets the standard for performance in both wet and dry conditions, offering drivers exceptional comfort, precise handling, and confident cornering, even at high speeds. The Ultrac range continues to be a top choice for summer tyres, balancing premium performance with affordability.
