DUNLOP Trademark Acquisition Paves the Way for Global Expansion
In a landmark move, Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. has acquired the DUNLOP trademark and other rights for four-wheel tyres in Europe, North America, and Oceania from The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. The $526 million deal includes an additional $105 million to facilitate the transition of DUNLOP customers in Europe and cover inventory purchases.

The acquisition strengthens Sumitomo's position in the global tyre market by enabling the company to operate the DUNLOP brand in key regions, with some exceptions, such as India, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei for four-wheel tyres.

Driving Premiumisation and Innovation
Sumitomo aims to position DUNLOP as a leading premium tyre brand, leveraging its strong heritage and innovative technologies to meet the demands of next-generation mobility. The company’s focus includes:

  • Active Tread Technology: A cutting-edge rubber compound that adapts to road conditions based on moisture and temperature, delivering superior performance in all-season tyres.
  • Premium OE Fitments: Expanding original equipment (OE) offerings for high-end vehicles.
  • Motorsports and Global Marketing: Enhancing brand visibility through motorsports and collaborations in tennis to solidify DUNLOP as a global premium brand.

Satoru Yamamoto, President and CEO of Sumitomo Rubber Industries, commented:
"It has been a great opportunity for our group to use the DUNLOP brand globally. This acquisition enables us to maximise the brand's potential not only in new regions but also in existing ones, accelerating our purpose: 'Through innovation, we will create a future of joy and well-being for all.'”

Dual-Brand Strategy with FALKEN
Sumitomo plans to utilise its dual-brand strategy, positioning DUNLOP as its core premium offering while continuing to grow the FALKEN brand. By tailoring product planning and marketing strategies for each region, the company aims to create differentiated products that appeal to customers, including SUV tyres and tyres with larger diameters (18 inches and above).

Collaboration with Goodyear
This acquisition builds on Sumitomo’s long history of collaboration with Goodyear, a relationship that dates back to the 1980s. Goodyear, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, remains a global leader in tyre manufacturing and sales, established in 1898.

A Future-Focused Vision
As part of its 2025 strategy, Sumitomo will focus on premiumisation, innovation, and sustainable growth. By aligning its tyre and sports businesses, the company aims to elevate the DUNLOP brand globally, ensuring it remains a customer favourite in the competitive tyre market.
