Independent tyre and vehicle service network Point S has said the recent Spring Statement may not offer much for motorists—but presents real opportunity for the aftermarket.

In response to the government’s Spring Statement, Point S UK Managing Director Ali Yilmaz acknowledged the lack of direct support for drivers but believes the aftermarket sector stands to gain—particularly those who can adapt to a shifting vehicle ownership landscape.

“With recent increases in vehicle excise duty and the Chancellor's decision not to halve VAT on new EV purchases, we anticipate motorists will keep their existing ICE vehicles for longer, creating several opportunities for aftermarket businesses," said Yilmaz.
That forecast comes amid figures showing a three percent contraction in the European new car market. “We're already witnessing hesitation in the new car market… as uncertain consumers postpone vehicle purchases,” he added.

Point S believes this trend, coupled with ongoing underinvestment in road repairs and infrastructure, will accelerate wear and tear on the UK’s already ageing car parc. The absence of new funding for potholes or road surface maintenance reinforces the need for vehicle upkeep to fall more heavily on drivers and the independent sector.

“However,” Yilmaz continued, “with household budgets remaining tight, independent aftermarket businesses must demonstrate to customers the value of investing in preventative maintenance and repairs for their safety and that of other road users.”

This perspective aligns with Point S UK's broader ambition, having recently declared its intention to become the UK’s largest independent automotive service network by 2035. Read more >

The network’s confidence in the sector’s resilience and relevance suggests a strong belief that, even without headline-grabbing policy support, aftermarket services will continue to play a central role in keeping the UK’s vehicles on the road.
