Germany Enforces Stricter Winter Tyre Regulations: 3PMSF Symbol Now Mandatory

New Rules Come into Effect, Replacing M+S Tyre Marking for Winter Driving

Starting tomorrow, drivers in Germany will be required to adhere to new regulations concerning winter and all-season tyres. The update mandates that only tyres with the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) symbol, which certifies a tyre’s performance in severe winter conditions, will be allowed on the road. This change means that the widely recognised M+S (Mud and Snow) marking will no longer suffice for winter driving.

Key Points of the New Regulation:

  1. 3PMSF Requirement:
Under the new rules, tyres must feature the 3PMSF symbol to be deemed safe for winter conditions in Germany. The 3PMSF marking confirms that the tyre has passed stringent testing for traction, braking, and handling on snow and ice. Tyres without this symbol will not be permitted for winter use.
  2. M+S Symbol Limitations:
The M+S marking, while traditionally associated with winter performance, does not meet the same testing standards as 3PMSF-rated tyres. In fact, many summer tyres also carry the M+S symbol, which can give drivers a false sense of security regarding their performance in snowy or icy conditions.
  3. Penalties for Non-Compliance:
Drivers using tyres without the 3PMSF marking during winter conditions will face fines starting at €60. Penalties can increase substantially if a collision occurs while using non-compliant tyres, leading to higher fines and possible legal repercussions.
  4. Transitional Period:
A transitional period allows the continued use of M+S tyres manufactured before December 31, 2017, until September 30, 2024. From October 1, 2024, all tyres used in winter conditions must have the 3PMSF symbol to remain legal on German roads.

Recommendations for Drivers

  • Check Your Tyre Markings:
Drivers should inspect their tyres for the 3PMSF symbol. If the tyres only display the M+S marking and were manufactured after 2017, a replacement is necessary to comply with the new regulations.
  • Tread Depth:
To ensure safety, winter tyres should have a minimum tread depth of 4 mm. Adequate tread depth is essential for maintaining grip and performance in challenging winter weather.

Improving Road Safety

The enforcement of the 3PMSF requirement is designed to enhance road safety during Germany's winter months. By ensuring that vehicles are equipped with tyres that meet the highest standards for severe weather performance, the regulation aims to reduce accidents and improve overall driving conditions on icy and snow-covered roads.

For drivers in Germany, now is the time to check your tyres and ensure compliance with the new regulations.
