Toyo Tires Enhances Tyre Development with HPE’s Cray XD Technology

Toyo Tires has partnered with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to enhance its tyre development process by implementing HPE’s seventh-generation high-performance computing (HPC) system. Delivered through the HPE GreenLake cloud platform, this advanced system is expected to significantly reduce the time-to-market for Toyo Tires’ next-generation solutions by improving the speed and precision of processing complex structural tyre data.

Enhancing Speed and Precision in Tyre Development

The upgraded HPC system, featuring HPE Cray XD technology, is designed to accelerate Toyo Tires' development cycle by reducing the time required for complex, large-scale design simulations. These simulations are critical for training the company’s AI models, which play a key role in the digital transformation of tyre design. The new system provides the flexibility to scale HPC resources and offers greater access for Toyo Tires' design engineers, enabling them to work more efficiently and collaboratively.

Hirokazu Mochizuki, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of HPE Japan, commented on the collaboration: “We are pleased to collaborate with Toyo Tires and strengthen its digitalized development with powerful HPE Cray performance delivered via HPE GreenLake cloud. The latest solution provides Toyo Tires with an optimal level of performance, in a flexible environment, to support a new era of innovation with speed and efficiency.”

Optimising Tyre Design with Advanced HPC Capabilities

In a collaborative effort with HPE experts, Toyo Tires has optimised one of its critical in-house computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications, TOYO-FEM, on the new system. This optimisation has enabled more designers to run simulations simultaneously, greatly improving productivity. The enhanced HPC system has also reduced the time required to simulate large-scale designs, further refining the company's deep learning inverse problem solver, which uses simulation data to develop tyre designs—including structure, shape, and tread patterns.

Tamotsu Mizutani, Corporate Officer and Division General Manager for the Technology Development Division of Toyo Tires, highlighted the growing demand for digitalised solutions in the automotive industry: “As the automotive industry accelerates its digital transformation and increasingly moves toward simulation instead of prototyping and performance evaluation testing, automakers are increasingly requesting mathematical models of tyres, which is a faster, more cost-efficient, and sustainable process. This requires numerical models of the tyres, and our new HPC system will advance this move toward digitalised simulation. Our design engineers are excited about the enhanced capabilities of the system, and we are looking forward to accelerating the training of our AI models.”

The integration of HPE’s cutting-edge technology into Toyo Tires’ development framework marks a significant leap forward in the company’s ability to deliver innovative, high-performance tyres to the market faster and more efficiently than ever before.
