Independent garage Halfway House has announced plans to scale to 11 locations over the next seven years, beginning with a £45,000 investment in a new Shrewsbury workshop. The expansion will support growing customer demand, enable EV servicing, and create multiple new roles.

New facility responds to growing demand and EV readiness

Halfway House, owned by Russell Hughes and located in Shrewsbury, has launched its second facility with seven ramps, upgraded customer areas, and on-site parking. The 6,112 sq ft site on Featherbed Lane reflects strong organic demand, with customer numbers rising by up to seven per week without formal marketing activity.

The move builds on the company’s September 2024 membership in the Point S network, giving access to improved tyre supply chains, parts availability, and national marketing support.

Skills development and employment boost

The expansion will generate technician, customer service, and marketing positions. The garage has maintained a longstanding apprenticeship link with Shrewsbury College, inducting one apprentice annually for over 20 years.

"Success will hinge on willingness to invest and adapt to emerging opportunities," said Hughes. "Our strategy is clear – go big or go bust."

Next steps: EV infrastructure and workforce upskilling

Halfway House is prioritising investment in electric vehicle service infrastructure and technician training, aiming to meet shifting aftermarket demands. A third site is already under consideration within the next two years.

The Halfway House expansion highlights how independent garages are adapting to structural shifts in the aftermarket, including EV readiness and skills development. The move aligns with broader industry trends that see non-franchise operators investing in scalable service models, digital support through networks like Point S, and the transition to electric and connected vehicle servicing.
