Micheldever Tyre Services Takes Major Step Towards Sustainability with Solar Panel Installation

Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS), one of the UK’s leading tyre distributors, has taken a significant step towards its sustainability goals with the installation of advanced solar panels at its Halifax (Elland) depot. This green energy initiative is set to provide substantial financial savings while also dramatically reducing the company’s environmental impact.

The solar panel system, spanning 1,270 square metres and comprising 635 individual modules, is expected to generate a third of the depot’s energy needs. This move will result in significant reductions in MTS’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources, with projections showing a CO2 emissions reduction of over 50,000 kg per year. This aligns with MTS’s ambitious sustainability targets, which include halving its carbon footprint by 2025 and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

Significant Financial and Environmental Impact

In addition to the environmental benefits, the installation is expected to save MTS up to £7.5 million over the next 25 years. Dave Haddock, Logistics Director at MTS, highlighted the dual advantages of the project:

"We are always looking at ways to improve our carbon footprint and align with our environmental goals. The solar panels will reduce our CO2 emissions significantly and provide us with valuable insights on how we can implement similar improvements at other depots nationwide. Plus, with an estimated £7.5 million in savings over the next 25 years, the decision to go solar was a ‘no brainer’."

The Halifax depot was strategically chosen as a pilot site after a detailed review of MTS’s UK locations. Following approval from the landlord and the local electricity grid operator (DNO), the project moved ahead smoothly. Encouraged by the success of the Halifax installation, MTS now plans to roll out similar solar projects across other depots by 2025, subject to approvals.

Driving MTS’s Broader Sustainability Goals

The solar panel installation is a crucial component of MTS’s wider sustainability strategy. By harnessing renewable energy and improving operational efficiency, the company is proving that economic gains and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. The project not only supports MTS’s environmental goals but also offers valuable insights for future energy-saving initiatives at other depots.

This initiative reinforces MTS’s commitment to sustainability and demonstrates that practical investments in green technologies can benefit both the planet and the bottom line. As the tyre industry increasingly focuses on eco-friendly practices, MTS is positioning itself at the forefront of this shift, leading by example with its ambitious carbon reduction and energy efficiency targets.
