Ipswich Buses Signs Exclusive Three-Year Deal with Michelin Services & Solutions

Ipswich Buses has entered into a new three-year contract with Michelin’s Services & Solutions division as part of its ongoing strategy to enhance its customer service and operational efficiency. The decision to switch from a rival tyre manufacturer to Michelin was driven by the proven longevity, performance, and added value offered by Michelin’s multi-life tyre policy.

A Strategic Move for Enhanced Performance and Sustainability

Under the exclusive agreement, Michelin will supply, fit, and manage all the tyres across Ipswich Buses’ fleet, which consists of 75 single- and double-deck buses, along with a small number of coaches. The deal marks a significant step for Ipswich Buses as it looks to improve the quality of its services for the local community.

Dan Bassett, Managing Director at Ipswich Buses, highlighted the reasons behind the switch: “Having experience of the Michelin product in a previous role, I have seen the quality and durability of the tyres first-hand. We are always looking to improve our services for the people of Ipswich and its surrounding areas. As the only part of the vehicle that comes into contact with the road, having the right tyre on our buses is absolutely critical. It helps improve the quality of the ride, the safety of the vehicles, and limits any unnecessary downtime.”

Michelin's Multi-Life Policy: A Sustainable Choice

A key factor in securing the contract was the sustainability benefits provided by Michelin’s multi-life policy. This approach involves regrooving worn tyres once the tread depth reaches 3-4mm, a process carried out on-site at Ipswich Buses depots by Michelin’s expert technicians. Regrooving extends the tyre’s life, keeping it in its most fuel-efficient state for longer.

After the regrooved tyres reach the end of their life, they are sent to Michelin’s Remix factory in Stoke-on-Trent to be retreaded. This process effectively doubles the lifespan of the tyre casing, conserves natural resources, and supports UK manufacturing.

Michelin will supply both new and Remix urban bus tyres from its MICHELIN X InCity range. These tyres are specifically designed for urban environments, featuring reinforced sidewalls that protect against kerbing and accidental damage, thereby reducing wheel interventions and downtime.

“We have been particularly impressed with the Remix product, and the overall level of service we have received from the Michelin team has been exemplary,” Bassett added. “It’s a fantastic overall package.”

Supporting Local Communities with Reliable Transport

Owned by Ipswich Borough Council, Ipswich Buses serves nearly 20,000 passengers daily across Ipswich and its surrounding areas. The decision to partner with Michelin is part of a broader commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient public transport for the community.

By choosing Michelin, Ipswich Buses is not only investing in high-quality, durable tyres but also aligning with a partner dedicated to sustainability and local manufacturing. This new partnership ensures that the fleet will be equipped with tyres that enhance safety, improve ride quality, and reduce environmental impact, all while maintaining high levels of operational efficiency.
