Urban bus fleets operate under intense conditions, making tyre longevity a critical factor. The Conti Urban HA 5 rises to the occasion with an enhanced tread cap and base compound specifically formulated for urban environments. This advancement significantly extends the tyre’s lifespan, reducing the frequency of replacements and thereby lowering overall operational costs—a crucial benefit for budget-conscious fleet operators.
Moreover, the tyre’s reduced rolling resistance directly contributes to better fuel efficiency, making it an environmentally friendly option. By lowering the energy required to move vehicles, the Conti Urban HA 5 helps to cut down on both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This is particularly advantageous for fleets incorporating electric buses, as improved efficiency can extend battery life and reduce charging intervals.
Safety and passenger comfort are paramount in urban transport, and the Conti Urban HA 5 excels in both areas. Its adaptive tread technology delivers superior traction and braking performance in both wet and dry conditions, ensuring a reliable grip on the road. The robust tread pattern is also designed to withstand the frequent stops and starts typical of urban driving.
Continental has also focused on reducing road noise, a common concern in city transport. The tyre’s multi-pitch technology minimizes perceived noise, offering a quieter and more comfortable ride for passengers and drivers alike. This feature has earned the Conti Urban HA 5 an A-rating for noise on the EU tyre label, underscoring its superior performance in this category.
Sustainability is at the core of the Conti Urban HA 5’s design. The tyre’s thick sidewall and robust compounds enhance durability, particularly against curb impacts and other common urban obstacles. Additionally, the tyre is compatible with Continental’s ContiLifeCycle concept, which supports retreading and recycling to extend the tyre’s life and reduce environmental impact.
For fleets looking to maximise efficiency, the Conti Urban HA 5 can be equipped with ContiConnect sensors. These sensors provide real-time data on tyre pressure and temperature, allowing for predictive maintenance and reducing the risk of unexpected downtimes. This digital integration is particularly valuable in urban settings, where maintaining schedules and avoiding delays are essential.
“The Conti Urban HA 5 is a significant advancement in urban tyre technology,” said Hinnerk Kaiser, Head of Product Development EMEA at Continental. “We have designed a tyre that meets the practical needs of our customers. The new tread pattern and multi-pitch technology enhance wet performance and reduce the perceived noise, contributing to a safer and more comfortable ride.”
With the electrification of urban bus fleets gaining momentum—18 percent of new urban buses registered in the EU in 2023 were electric—the Conti Urban HA 5 is designed to meet the unique demands of electric vehicles. EVs typically exert higher torque and weight compared to traditional diesel-powered buses, necessitating a tyre with robust construction and advanced materials. The Conti Urban HA 5 is built to withstand these increased demands, making it an ideal choice for the growing number of electric buses on European roads.
The Conti Urban HA 5 will be available from September 2024 in the 275/70 R 22.5 dimension, with additional sizes (245/70 R 19.5, 265/70 R 19.5, 315/60 R 22.5) expected to be launched at a later date. This range of sizes ensures that the tyre can meet the diverse needs of urban transport operators across Europe.
