Kemi Ojo-Osagie, a Graduate Associate at GXO, has begun a six-month secondment in Ghana with the international development organisation Transaid, contributing to the national rollout of a newly developed standard for training Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers.

The secondment, an integral part of GXO’s commitment to talent development and global impact, sees Kemi focusing on advocacy and outreach. Her role involves engaging with commercial vehicle drivers and key stakeholders within the Driving Safety Across Ghana project.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

Kemi, a participant in GXO’s two-year graduate programme, opted to extend her time to take part in the secondment. She describes the experience as "life-changing" and a unique opportunity to contribute to road safety in Ghana.

“The secondment with Transaid was mentioned in my initial induction at GXO, but I wasn’t sure it was going to be an option for me because of scheduling. The extension was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse, and it has been life-changing so far. I feel very fortunate that Transaid created space for me within their organisation,” said Kemi.

Her early work in Ghana includes developing fact sheets for drivers and supporting educational outreach at truck parks near coastal ports. By the end of her placement, she aims to expand these activities to additional regions across the country.

Industry Support for Transaid’s Programme

Transaid, which has been operating driver training initiatives in Ghana since 2021 with funding from the Puma Energy Foundation, has already delivered refresher training to over 2,000 drivers. This training has been facilitated by 19 HGV driver trainers and four master trainers, working under newly developed standards tailored to Ghana’s transport sector.

Transaid’s Ghana Project Manager, Thelma Ayisi, praised Kemi’s contribution, noting that GXO secondees consistently bring expertise and professionalism to the programme:

“The secondees who join us every year are a testament to GXO as an organisation. They are always excellent additions to our team and offer impressive levels of expertise and professionalism. Kemi is no different and is already proving to be a fantastic colleague, and we’re excited for the opportunities she is going to have with us over the coming months.”

GXO’s Commitment to Talent Development

The secondment programme is part of GXO’s broader commitment to fostering talent and giving graduates meaningful global opportunities. Gavin Williams, Managing Director of GXO Logistics UK and Ireland, and a Transaid Trustee, highlighted the importance of the initiative:

“We are incredibly proud of our partnership with Transaid and we wish Kemi all the best with her secondment. Transaid’s road safety and driver training is a brilliant initiative for our graduates to get involved in, learning and teaching the importance of safety within logistics. At GXO we are committed to developing talent and providing meaningful opportunities for our colleagues to make a difference globally, and I’m positive that Kemi will do just that.”

Corporate Engagement with Transaid

GXO’s involvement in Transaid’s work is part of a broader corporate initiative that allows corporate supporters to second employees to work on development projects. Kemi is the fourth GXO graduate to participate in a six-month secondment with Transaid, with a new graduate selected every six months.

Transaid offers corporate partners secondment opportunities ranging from one week to over a year, enabling logistics professionals to contribute their expertise to road safety initiatives in Africa.
