Energy-efficient Michelin tyres offer lower costs and longer life.

Energy efficiency and sustainability at the heart of Michelin’s latest tyre developments

Michelin has announced a new wave of energy-efficient tyres for electric vehicles (EVs) and commercial fleets. The range, which includes the e.Primacy All-Season, X Line Energy 3, X Multi Energy 2, and EV-specific models like the Pilot Sport EV, aims to cut energy consumption, extend driving range, and lower total cost of ownership—critical priorities amid economic pressure and rising fuel and electricity costs.

Reduced rolling resistance for fuel and range gains

At the core of the range is a focus on rolling resistance. By minimising the energy lost as heat when tyres rotate, Michelin’s new products can significantly reduce fuel use in combustion vehicles and improve battery range in EVs.

  • The Pilot Sport EV enables up to 60 km of additional range per charge.
  • The e.Primacy All-Season offers up to 32 km more range for EVs and outlasts leading competitors by up to 21,000 km.

These performance benefits are supported by Michelin’s proprietary tread compounds and sidewall design enhancements, including GreenPower and Cushion Guard technologies.

Commercial truck tyres: quantifiable fuel savings

The X Line Energy 3 and X Multi Energy 2 tyres are designed for long-haul and regional truck fleets respectively. Michelin reports that:

  • The X Line Energy 3 can save 0.62 litres of fuel per 100 km—translating into savings of £588–£1,847 per truck over 150,000 km.
  • The X Multi Energy 2 offers fuel savings of 1.2 L/100 km, alongside lower CO₂ emissions and enhanced grip.

These models are aimed at fleet operators under increasing pressure to meet cost and emissions targets without compromising durability.

EV-specific designs for high torque and weight

Electric buses and heavy EVs require reinforced tyre designs to cope with increased weight and torque. Michelin’s X InCity EV Z, already in use by Volvo’s UK electric truck fleet, features enhanced load-bearing capacity and longer service life—key for commercial EV operations.

Sustainability through materials and noise reduction

Michelin’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its materials strategy:

  • Up to 58% of materials in new tyres are renewable or recycled.
  • The company is targeting 40% sustainable content across all tyres by 2030, and 100% by 2050.

Additionally, Michelin Acoustic Technology cuts interior noise by up to 20%, a key factor in EV driver comfort due to quieter powertrains.

Michelin’s energy-efficient tyres demonstrate the strategic convergence of sustainability, EV-readiness, and cost-saving performance—an increasingly vital trio across the tyre industry. As fleets electrify and regulations tighten, the demand for longer-lasting, low-resistance, and recyclable tyre solutions is expected to rise. Michelin’s hybrid compatibility approach also reflects the industry’s transitional phase, supporting mixed vehicle fleets with a single tyre strategy.
