TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety charity, has announced a strategic partnership with BikeSafe, the UK’s top police-led motorcycle safety initiative. The collaboration aims to emphasise the critical role of tyre maintenance in motorcyclist safety, reinforcing that a bike’s performance is only as good as the tyres it rides on.
BikeSafe is a nationwide road safety programme run by Advanced Police Motorcyclists to improve rider skills through eLearning, workshops, and observed rides. By integrating TyreSafe’s expertise into its sessions, BikeSafe will now actively encourage regular tyre checks as a key part of motorcycle safety.
Motorcyclists will be guided on how to check for:
✔️ Correct tyre pressure
✔️ Adequate tread depth
✔️ Signs of wear or damage
These checks are crucial for improving grip, handling, and stopping distances, ultimately reducing the risk of accidents.
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, highlighted the importance of the collaboration:
“We are delighted to partner with BikeSafe in our shared mission of promoting road safety. Tyres are the only point of contact between a motorbike and the road, so keeping them in top condition is essential for staying safe. Motorcyclists who make tyre checks part of their routine will greatly reduce their risk of incidents, especially in challenging conditions. This collaboration allows us to reach motorcyclists at the grassroots level and reinforce the message that regular tyre maintenance is a vital aspect of road safety.”
The partnership will ensure that BikeSafe workshops – which already cover essential skills like attitude, observation, and hazard awareness – now include dedicated tyre safety content.
Deputy Chief Constable Simon Blatchly OBE, strategic lead at the NPCC’s Police BikeSafe (UK), emphasised the importance of tyre safety:
“Tyre safety is a fundamental but often overlooked aspect of motorcycle roadworthiness. Through this partnership with TyreSafe, we are reinforcing the message that regular tyre checks should be second nature to every rider. A well-maintained bike, including its tyres, is essential for reducing risks and ensuring safer journeys. We welcome TyreSafe’s expertise in this area and look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on rider safety across the UK.”
Motorcyclists across the UK are encouraged to attend BikeSafe workshops to gain essential riding skills and tyre safety knowledge. By regularly checking and maintaining their tyres, riders can enhance their control, improve braking efficiency, and stay safer on the road.
