Giti Tire has begun embedding RFID chips into its European truck and bus (TBR) range, marking a pivotal moment in tyre lifecycle management. These chips will be built into the tyre sidewalls, enabling unique identification for each unit and creating an interconnected ecosystem of information accessible to all relevant stakeholders.
With the RFID chips, data spanning manufacturing, logistics, fleet management, retreading, and end-of-life processes will be standardised and streamlined. The information is collected and processed via the Tire Information Service (TIS) system, established by the Global Data Service for Tyres and Automotive Components (GDSO), a non-profit dedicated to tyre data standardisation.
Antonio Palummo, TBR Senior Engineer – Europe at Giti Tire, emphasised the importance of the initiative:
“Through the GDSO, Giti Tire is actively participating in open communication by sharing required tyre information to create new services for a safer and more sustainable mobility journey."
The European Tyre and Rim Technical Organization (ETRTO) initiated TIS development in 2017, with Giti Tire joining the efforts in 2019. In 2022, this collaboration led to the creation of the GDSO, where Giti Tire became a Full Member in 2023. Today, Giti and 11 other premium and mid-market manufacturers work to define global standards for tyre data.
By embedding RFID chips, Giti Tire aims to eliminate inefficiencies caused by outdated manual processes and human error. “Digitisation is the catalyst for the future development of the tyre industry,” Palummo added, “and the ability to track and share information is the key to assure circularity and compliance with automatic and sustainable environments.”
The first Giti tyres equipped with RFID chips include the Giti GSR237EVO and Giti GDR675EVO, two Combi Road products designed for enhanced Rolling Resistance Coefficient (RRC). In the mixed-service range, the Giti GDM687 drive tyre and the Giti GAM838 steer tyre, slated for release in early 2025, will also feature this technology.
The new RFID-enabled tyres debuted at The Tire Cologne 2024, with Giti Tire promising to expand this feature to future patterns, including the upcoming ECOROAD segment.
