Pirelli secures sustainable rubber provision and promotes innovation in material usage
Pirelli has announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Hevea-Tec, the largest independent processor of natural rubber in Brazil. The transaction, expected to be completed by the end of 2023 pending regulatory approval, will be valued at approximately €21 million. This strategic move will not affect Pirelli's financial position target of €2.35 billion for 2023.
With the acquisition of Hevea-Tec, Pirelli aims to strengthen its natural rubber supply in Latin America, ensuring a consistent provision of this vital resource in the region. Furthermore, the company has plans to enhance Hevea-Tec's production volumes, thereby improving operational efficiency.
This acquisition will pave the way for the implementation of groundbreaking projects focused on maximising the use of sustainable, non-fossil-based materials in tire manufacturing, aligning with Pirelli's sustainability objectives. Additionally, by gaining greater control over the natural rubber supply chain, Pirelli will reduce CO2 emissions through local sourcing and initiate new Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification initiatives. Notably, Pirelli is already recognised as a trailblazer in this area within its segment.
