As the UK braces for the unpredictable weather of autumn and winter, a recent survey by Bridgestone has revealed alarming statistics about motorists' attitudes towards tyre safety. The findings come just in time for National Tyre Safety Month this October, a campaign spearheaded by TyreSafe to raise awareness about the importance of regular tyre checks.
Bridgestone's survey of 2,000 drivers found that a staggering 81% admitted to never checking their tyres. Even more concerning, only 14% viewed tyres as the most crucial safety feature on their vehicles. This is despite tyres being the sole contact between a vehicle and the road, and being implicated in 159 deaths or serious injuries due to defects.
The survey also highlighted that many motorists undervalue the importance of tyres compared to other safety features. For instance, 24% of respondents considered airbags more critical than tyres.
These findings are not isolated. They align with the grim statistic of 4,596 casualties from tyre-related incidents in recent years. Furthermore, an estimated 10 million illegal tyres are believed to be on Britain's roads annually.
Bridgestone's North Region Vice President, Andrea Manenti, expressed concern over these findings, stating, "We remain surprised that tyres aren’t seen as the number one safety device on a car in the minds of so many motorists." He emphasised the need for more education on the topic, especially given the UK's sudden weather changes.
In response to these findings, Bridgestone is launching the "Become a Bridgestone Road Safety Hero" campaign. The initiative will kick off with Bridgestone employees and aims to spread the message across the UK. As part of this campaign, Bridgestone plans to conduct hundreds of free tyre checks. One such event is scheduled for October 19 at Roadchef’s Norton Caines Services on the M6 Toll.
Bridgestone, a premium tyre manufacturer, has always emphasised the significance of quality. They recently launched the Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6, an all-year-round tyre. This new product boasts outstanding braking performance across seasons, exceptional snow performance, and a 20% improvement in mileage compared to its predecessor.
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, summed up the sentiment perfectly: "Tyres are unique in being the one component which determines how well a vehicle accelerates, brakes, and steers." He urged drivers to remember to ACT – check Air pressure, Condition, and Tread.
